FAQ - Company
What is the Tune Dem™?
The Linn philosophy is very simple – if it sounds better, it is better. The Tune Dem™ is how we recommend that our products are demonstrated. When carrying out an A-B demonstration, it is sometimes possible to be confused by extraneous factors such as loudness and tone. The Tune Dem™ is a way to compare the two products and decide on how easy it is to follow the tune and appreciate the musical piece as a whole on each one – this allows you to hear quite clearly which product sounds better. The method involves silent repetition of the sound from the loudspeakers, silently singing along simultaneously with the sound from the speaker. The easier this is to do, the more accurate the system performance.
Where can I find technical specifications for Linn products?
Linn publish a limited number of specifications for our products which are available on each product page on our website or through our retailers. In general, we would like to discourage the use of technical specifications to compare products since these have little bearing on real music. We encourage potential customers to arrange demonstrations of our products so that they can judge their relative merits for themselves. In this way, they will never be disappointed in their purchase.
What is the 'single-stage build'?
The 'single-stage build' refers to a production method used at Linn in preference to a production line system. One person assembles, tests and packs the product at a fully equipped station. Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs) convey components and test stations to the assembler, who then builds, tests, signs the product and packages it ready for despatch to maximise performance and quality.
What are the benefits of Surface Mount Technology?
Surface Mount Technology (SMT) is a method of constructing electronic circuits in which the components are mounted directly onto the surface of printed circuit boards (PCBs). Many of the circuit boards used in Linn products are populated in this way. This method allows more components to be fitted into a smaller area and creates shorter, straighter circuit paths, which in turn reduces electrical noise. This is greatly beneficial in audio circuitry and produces audible improvements in performance.
What is a switch mode power supply?
Many Linn products incorporate a Switch Mode Power Supply (SMPS), which is a form of power supply that precisely regulates output voltage. It is generally smaller, lighter and more efficient than a traditional power supply and because it controls power independently of load or input voltage, it can easily be converted for different mains voltages.
Where can I find a service manual for my Linn system?
Linn only supply service information to our authorised service and repair agents and as such no service manuals are publicly available. This ensures that our products are repaired to the highest standards and delicate components are only handled by trained service personnel.
