Introduction

This page describes in detail each of the user settings available on all Linn networked preamplifiers. Certain settings may not be available on all preamps, depending on the features supported by specific product models. Available features are indicated in the product specific documentation for each preamp.

User settings are divided into two categories, Control and Configuration.

Control Settings

Control settings relate to properties that may typically be modified by a user on a regular basis (e.g Volume). These settings are typically adjusted using a control point application such as KinskyDesktop.

Standby

This is the standby state of the device. It can be set to true or false. When set to true the preamp enters a reduced power mode and no audio is output.

Current Source

Current Source is the source that is currently selected (active) on the preamp. When Current Source is changed the volume automatically ramps down then ramps back up once the new source has been activated. This is to prevent any audible glitches on the output channels.

Volume

Volume is the master volume setting of the preamp. It can be set to any value between 0 and the value specified in the Volume Limit configuration parameter. A volume setting of 80 is equivalent to unity gain (output volume = input volume).

Mute

Mute is used to silence all audio output channels. It can be set to true or false. When set to true, the output channels are silenced.

Balance

Balance is the volume bias between the left and right channels of the preamp. It can be set to any value between -15 and +15. Negative values will produce a bias towards the left channels. Positive values will produce a bias towards the right channels. Setting the Balance to -15 (extreme left) will cause the right channels to be muted. Setting the Balance to +15 (extreme right) will cause the left channels to be muted.

Configuration Settings

Configuration settings relate to properties that are normally only modified occasionally (e.g Source Name). These settings are typically adjusted using an application aimed specifically at configuration such as Konfig.

Name

This is the name shown by the device when it appears on the network.

Room

This is the name of the room that the device is assigned to. A number of devices can can be grouped into the same room by giving them the same room name.

Volume Limit

Volume Limit is the upper limit imposed on the master volume of the preamp. Volume Limit can be set to any value between 0 and 100.

Startup Volume Enabled

Startup Volume Enabled is used in conjunction with the parameter Startup Volume to determine the volume when the preamp is brought out of standby. It can be set to true or false. When set to true the volume will automatically revert to the value of Startup Volume. When set to false the volume will automatically revert to its previous value (ie the volume prior to entering standby).

Startup Volume

Startup Volume is used in conjunction with the parameter Startup Volume Enabled to determine the volume when the preamp is brought out of standby. It can set to any value in the range 0 to 100. Provided Startup Volume Enabled is set to true, the volume will revert to the value of Startup Volume when the preamp is brought out of standby. Note: if Startup Volume is greater than the Volume Limit property, the value of Volume Limit will be applied instead.

Startup Source Enabled

Startup Source Enabled is used in conjunction with the parameter Startup Source to determine which source is selected when the preamp is brought out of standby. It can be set to true or false. When set to true the source specified in Startup Source will automatically be selected. When set to false the previous source will automatically be selected (ie the source that was active prior to entering standby).

Startup Source

Startup Source is used in conjunction with the parameter Startup Source Enabled to determine which source is selected when the preamp is brought out of standby. Provided Startup Source Enabled is set to true, the source specified in Startup Source will automatically be selected.

Sources

Every preamp has a number of sources. Each source has a number of parameters. Some source parameters, such as Source Name, exist on every source. Other source parameters only exist on certain types of sources, such as Source Adc Attenuate.

Source Name

This is the name of the source as it appears on the front panel of the device or in the list of sources displayed in a control point. All sources have the Source Name property.

Source Visible

Source Visible determines whether the source should appear in source lists on the control point or when browsing through sources on the front panel. It can be set to true or false. When set to false, the source is hidden from view. It is used to temporarily remove sources that are not being used. All sources have the Source Visible property.

Source Unity Gain

Source Unity Gain determines whether audio from the source should be affected by the volume settings of the preamp. It can be set to true or false. When set to true, the audio will be output at unity gain volume (output volume = input volume) and adjusting the preamp volume will have no effect while that particular source is active (selected). All preamp sources have the Source Unity Gain property.

Source Volume Offset

Source Volume Offset is used to specify a small offset to be applied to the volume when a particular source is selected. It can be set to any value between -15 and +15. Negative values cause the volume to be reduced. Positive values cause the volume to be increased. This property is used to normalise the effects of jumps in the output volume, when changing between sources, caused by differences in the output levels connected source devices.

Source Video

Source Video allows the user to specify that the audio from the source originates from a video device (DVD, set top box etc). It can be set to true or false. When set to true the audio can be delayed if necessary when that particular source is active. On an analogue source this setting will cause the audio to be digitised. Note: a minimum delay of 50ms will be applied when this setting is enabled. All preamp sources have the Source Video property.
