Is Linn loudspeaker cable directional?
All Linn loudspeaker and interconnect cables are directional. The Linn logo indicates the direction of the cable; the triangle within the logo should point towards the loudspeakers when connected correctly.
What interconnect cables should I use in my Linn system?
Linn products come supplied with black interconnects specified to match the level of performance expected from our audio systems; however, we also produce a silver interconnect cable which offers a significant sonic improvement over the standard cable. The Linn silver interconnect cable is terminated with high quality gold-plated phono plugs, has improved shielding and higher specification copper wire.
How long can I make my cables?
In all cases it is beneficial to use short lengths of cable. Longer cables tend to mean increased loss of quality and greater susceptibility to noise and interference, so using short runs of cable will usually provide the best sound. In a domestic situation it is not always feasible or practical to use short lengths. In such cases, it is better to favour short speaker cables over short interconnect cables as there is greater potential for loss in the former. In essence, a better sound is normally achieved by moving the power amplifier close to the speakers, using shorter cables to the speakers and longer cables to the rest of the system.
Will a mains conditioner improve the sound of my system?
Linn products are designed to compensate for exactly the type of mains fluctuations that are to be expected in a domestic environment. Improving the mains supply to your Linn products may improve the performance to some degree. It is difficult, however, to estimate how much and in what way this would improve your system's performance; if indeed it would make any difference at all, as so many different factors are involved.
When should I use balanced connections?
A balanced interconnect system is used to minimise the noise interference that is picked up in data transmission. The technique involves splitting the signal into two components at the transmission end and inverting the phase on one channel. The signal is then summed at the receiving end so all data discrepancies (noise) in the signal are cancelled out. This method is ideal for long runs of cables and as such is most commonly implemented in our multi-room Knekt installations. We normally only suggest using balanced interconnects in the instance of long cable runs such as recording studios or live musical events. This is due to the fact that the complexity of a system which converts an audio signal to balanced and back requires the signal to go through more circuitry than would be acceptable in relation to the difference in sonic quality that could be achieved in a relatively short run of cable.
What are BFAs?
BFAs (British Federation of Audio) connections comply with European safety standards as an alternative to 4mm 'banana' plugs. The outer insulation of a BFA plug prevents accidental shorting when connecting to an amplifier and is too big to be inserted into a standard European mains socket. Your retailer will be able to supply BFAs and advise you on the connections most suitable for your system.
