An Aktiv system refers to a Linn audio system where the loudspeaker’s internal passive crossover is bypassed and an active crossover is used. In a Linn system, these active crossovers take the form of modules which are fitted to the amplifiers internally and allow the signal to be filtered immediately prior to the amplification stage. Aktiv crossovers operate at line level, the filters are optimised for each drive unit in the loudspeaker.  The Aktiv card filters the audio before each amplifier channel.  One channel of amplification is required for each drive unit in the loudspeaker. There is no lossy passive crossover in the system anymore, and therefore much more of the audio signal is delivered to the loudspeaker. The Aktiv channel is also able to exert a much greater degree of control over the signal and these qualities combine to provide a significant improvement in sonic performance over standard 'passive' operation.
