System requirements

This page provides a minimum requirements specification for the devices that are required in a Klimax DS system.

DS12:System Test provides a list of devices that meet this specification, that have additionally been tested by Linn.

Ethernet Switch

• It is a dedicated, stand alone switch. Linn recommends against using the switches built into consumer grade adsl routers, cable modems, or wireless access points. The processing power of such devices is often shared between its various functions and is therefore not always capable of full performance
• It is either a 100 Mbps or 1000Mbps full duplex switch
• It is capable of fully utilising all ports simultaneously. On vendor’s specification pages, this sometimes listed under a category called the “switch backplane” or the “switch bandwidth”. For an 8 port 100Mbps switch, this “switch bandwidth” should be 1.6Gbps. This number comes from 100Mbps in plus 100Mbps out times the 8 ports. For a 16 port gigabit switch, the “switch bandwidth” would be 32 Gbps. (2*16*1000Mbps)

Wireless Access Point

The WAP connects the control point to the ethernet network. Linn recommends using standalone wireless access points. Wireless access points built into switches and other consumer grade products are frequently (but not always) of a lower quality.

• "Enterprise grade"
• Wireless G, or better
• Robust connection quality

And optionally

• Power over Ethernet (PoE)

NAS

The system requirements of the NAS are to provide a DHCP server to the network, host the selected media server, and present the music file system over open file sharing protocols.

The following are minimum requirements of the NAS:

1. DHCP server
2. Raid (at least levels 1 or 5).
3. Supports Twonky 4.4 (for Upnp AV 1.0)
4. High end read throughput ( > 15 MB/s -- megabytes per second)
5. Gigabit ethernet
6. Samba/CIFS server
7. Easy configuration
8. Scriptable remote configuration/setup
9. Easy installation of Twonky Media Server

Media Server

• uPnP AV v1 certified or DNLA 1.0
• FLAC support
• Easy Installation on NAS

Control Point

The Linn GUI runs on .NET 2.0

UMPC

• 800x480 or 1024x600
• Microsoft Windows XP Tablet PC edition 2005
• .NET 2.0
• 600MHz processor or greater, (800Mhz preferred)

Other Windows PCs

• Windows XP Professional 2002
• 800MHz processor or greater
• .NET 2.0

Installation PC

The configuration/installation PC runs the LinnConfig application and optionally the ripping software

• Windows XP Professional 2002
• .NET 2.0

Ripper

Ripping software is not part of the system specification. However, any ripper should meet the following requirements

• Supports "accurate ripping", (ie. guarentees the integrity of the rip)
• FLAC support
• Supports Linn Digital Media Meta-Data Standard, available from here Platform:Network Media:Documentation and Linfo.
