DS Network Setup:Configuring the WAP
From LinnDocs
The guidelines that follow apply to the DLink 3200AP WAP. Other WAPs may be used but detailed setup instructions for alternative devices will not be given here.
Do not install the software on the CD-ROM that comes with the WAP!
Connect the laptop directly to the WAP with an Ethernet cable. At this stage only the laptop and the WAP should be connected. Leave any other devices disconnected.
- Configure the laptop to have a fixed IP address of 192.168.0.51
- Open a web browser and type http://192.168.0.50 into the address bar then hit enter.
The WAP configuration page should now appear in your browser. Username is admin - leave the password blank. Now set the WAP to obtain IP address automatically as follows:
- Click the "LAN" button on the left hand side of the page.
- Now set the "Get IP From" setting to "Dynamic (DHCP)".
Click the green "Apply" button at the bottom right of the page.
When finished, reconfigure the laptop to obtain IP address automatically and reconnect it and the WAP to the switch.
The WAP should now obtain an IP address from the router. Connect to the router (http://192.168.72.1) and find out the WAP's new IP address. This should appear under "Attached Devices" or similar. Then, set the router to always give the WAP the same address. For the Netgear RP614 or WGR614, go to Advanced / LAN setup / Address Reservation.
Now reconnect to the WAP on its new IP address, and input the wireless settings (Basic Settings / Wireless.)
- Set the SSID (wireless network name) to whatever you wish.
- Set SSID broadcast to Enable.
- Select the channel manually - untick the "Auto Channel Scan". Make sure this is as far away from other WiFi channels being used as possible. NetStumbler is good free software to do this if you're not sure.
If you wish, you can now set Authentication and Key settings for security, but it is often best to test things without encryption first!
- Now click the Apply button, but note that no changes will happen until you go to the top menu bar, click Configuration then Save and Activate. The WAP should then reboot and reload and you can then connect wirelessly.
